Storied Layers:
Exploring Mixed-Media Encaustic Collage
A PERSONAL COLLAGE JOURNEY IN WAX
Collage is all about bringing different elements together.
Once you form a sensibility about connection, how different elements relate to one another, you deepen your understanding of yourself and others.

Employing the natural luminosity, textural and layering possibilities of encaustic, this workshop takes the exciting combination of mixed media, encaustic and image far beyond straightforward collage to include unusual and innovative materials and techniques that communicate and entertain through personal narrative.
By journaling and mark-making, participants delve into personal histories, stories and myths as inspiration for the creation of unique collage papers using techniques such as pyrography, mono-printing and Gelli plate printing. Working abstract or realistically or a combination of both, participants will learn how to skillfully embed their created and found papers, images, patterns, botanicals, and textured materials to explore the lustrous veil-like quality that only the medium of encaustic collage can provide. Additional materials and techniques such as horse-hair, transfer films, image transfer, stencils and other forms of embellishment personalize and complete the collaged composition.
Discussions of the various types of narrative as a conceptual tool as well as examples of contemporary artist’s work in collage is also offered for a rich and immersive creative experience.

You swoon over textiles, prints, decorative arts, design, anything with pattern and image and you want to learn how to effectively incorporate these elements into your work.
You already include lots of image and collage in your work, but the work hasn't moved past mere collage for collage sake to involve meaningful content.
You love image and collage, but when you embed these elements into encaustic, the collage is blurred, burned or looks clunky.
You are frustrated with your current body of work, your process(es) and want to create consistency, and a cohesive portfolio.
You want to express yourself in a more meaningful way with your work.
Your creative process is stagnating and you want to learn a new process, idea or technique.
You have always wanted to create 'visual poetry' in your paintings.
You have no confidence in anything you do creatively and just feel that you should pack it in and quit.
You’ve been away from the studio for a while and want to get back into it, but don’t know where to start.
You would like to develop your own unique artistic voice.

Whenever I teach a Virtual Course I always warn participants not to run out and purchase a bunch of supplies. Watch the demonstrations to see if first, the technique interests you. Second, check to see if you might already have a supply on hand that may work as a good substitute before purchasing anything new.
I have included a supplies PDF on this page that is available for download. It includes three tiers of supplies for your convenience-a Basics List, A Delving In List and a more Comprehensive Supplies and Resources List. This PDF will also be emailed to you a few weeks before the first class.

Although its way more fun to attend the live classes, I understand that most people won't be able to make it to every class.
The recordings will be available for the duration of the 6 weeks plus 3 months following the last class.

“I loved the course on so many levels. I thought the timing, the spacing of different modules, the quotes, the books, the drawings, all worked out so beautifully. I couldn't wait to get up and get working each morning and was always surprised when the day was done. Your generosity and teaching style were inspiring and I can't wait to work on a new set of skills.”
Patty
“Thank you so much for the wonderful experience of learning encaustics with you. What an incredible teacher you are – not only giving us the technical information, but the creative steps to gain confidence to use them.”

“Lorraine is by far one of the best instructors in encaustic I have ever had. That is one of the reasons that the virtual class with her worked so well – she is an educator and understands how to teach, besides being an incredible encaustic artist. ”
