VERMONT ENCAUSTIC RETREATS AT LAREAU INN & FARM

ABOUT THE RETREATS

Nestled on 25 acres, in the serenity of the Mad River Valley in Waitsfield, Vermont, Lareau Inn and Farm is the perfect place for an immersive art retreat. The first retreats were held in Summer, 2021 and have become a haven for artists seeking to explore their creativity in a tranquil and inspiring setting. The retreats offer an opportunity to embark on a personal journey of introspection and connection with nature, to be both a creator and an observer, a participant and an admirer, where artists can freely explore their inner worlds while drawing inspiration from the outer world.

As you enter Lareau Farm, you’re greeted by a sprawling landscape, with rolling hills, lush meadow and garden, a gorgeous wooded hiking trail and the soothing rush of the nearby Mad River. The quaint rooms at Lareau Inn feature antique furnishings, comfortable beds, and charming baths in a Vermont farmhouse setting with delicious farm to table dining. The studio is located in the magical Event Pavilion situated to the rear of the Lareau property, offering tons of space in which to create. The common spaces throughout the Inn and surrounding outdoors are cozy, comfortable and quiet sanctuaries for you to rest and rejuvenate. An added bonus is a nearly daily visit to the studio by Peter, the sweetest farm kitty you’ll ever meet.

The heart of these retreats is the fusion of encaustic combined with various mixed media techniques, while utilizing the wellspring of inspiration of the surrounding landscape in the Mad River Valley. Nature walks along the riverbanks, hikes through the nearby forest, and moments of reflection amid the breathtaking scenery serve as prompts for creativity. Evenings in the studio or by the firepit are filled with interesting impromptu conversations, where participants discuss their inspirations, challenges, and breakthroughs.

These retreats are more than just a gathering; shared meals, evening conversations, and collaborative sessions create bonds that extend beyond the retreat's duration.

GENERAL INFORMATION

  • Although it is helpful to have had some experience with encaustic, it is not a requirement to participate. Participants range from beginners to advanced to professional. Because the content is so unique, everyone is learning something, even those who have worked professionally in encaustic for years. There is no judgement, no competition, no comparisons made. The first day always includes an optional basics demo for anyone who feels they need to brush up on their encaustic painting skills and knowledge. I usually tailor the demo to what the group needs to work on and offer individual attention to those who may need it. The basics demo puts everyone in the class on the same page and eases the anxiety some participants may be feeling.

  • No matter the subject of the Retreat, all retreats include the following teaching points for a well-rounded creative learning experience.

    • A library of inspirational books specific to your Retreat subject.

    • Learn how to use encaustic’s strengths (layering, transparency, luminosity) to tell your story.

    • Color, composition, scale, balance and other painting and design considerations are discussed.

    • Mark-making exercises with simple or complex marks to generate a personal language.

    • The option of an Individual Consultation/Critique discussion with each instructor. Bring a piece of work, a question, a concern, a problem and discuss it with the instructor(s).

    • Guided meditation time and planned walks will relax and open your mind and spirit to the land, helping to support and nurture your unique creative voice. These walks are very short, easy and are do-able for all experience levels.

    • An optional slide talk with examples of contemporary artists whose work applies the ideas and concepts discussed in the workshop is offered for inspiration.

•. Lots of open studio time to explore and interpret the inspiration gained from the meditations, exercises and walks.
